Perform like the Chicago Bulls in the 90s

I like using my experience from my career in basketball in order to draw comparisons and show potential value in business.

The Chicago Bulls legacy in the 90s is an unforgettable example. This team won six NBA championships between 1991 and 1998.

I will show you how you can create a team that performs like the Bulls in the 90s. We will check out why this team was so successful. And, you will learn what to transfer to your business situation. There are plenty analogies between sports and business:

Goals & performance

It is generally a challenge to put a business strategy into tangible goals and transfer these goals into daily practice.

The Chicago Bulls had a very concrete goal: win as many games as possible and finish the season as NBA champion. As simple as that! In ordert o reach that goal, all people involved collectively followed clear tasks, from players and coaching staff to medical department and the executive board.

Attitude & mindset

Too often one can observe people in business that put personal objectives before team goals and the company’s purpose. This leads to great individual performance versus the greater purpose.

The Bulls organization in the 90s focused on the main goal. Everyone added their contribution to this goal, and at the same time putting personal objectives aside whenever needed.

Roles & organization

Large corporates are usually build on complex organizational structures. Redundancies or even gaps in roles and procedures frequently appear. In addition to that, these roles and procedures significantly change due to technological disruption. Courage, creativity and flexibility become more and more important personal assets. Every now and then there are „perfect teams“ in sport, which are very successful for at least one season, because everything adds up: such were the Chicago Bulls. The „perfect team“ built on role and key players that all were extremly good in their part oft he game.

Talent & key players

Apparently, it becomes more and more difficult to source and hire young talents and retain them for a longer period of time. Many companies deal with high turnover, especially in times of change. In order to increase productivity and the quality of a team, key people and talents need to remain together and develop as a team for a certain duration.

The Bulls organization managed to retain Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen concurrently for over 10 years, two of the best and most talented players that ever played the game of basketball.

Leadership & Culture

Leadership becomes increasingly challenging in todays dynamic business world. Traditional management methods are outdated. The new generation of employees request for more appreciation, frequent feedback and more responsibility for relevant work.

The Bulls head coach Phil Jackson was one of the early modern leaders, especially when dealing with his players. In critical moments of the game he stept back, believed in and trusted his players on the court. His success speaks for itself: eleven championship titles make him the most successful coach in NBA history. He also holds the record with over 70% game wins. In 2007, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

1:1 Coaching

What is it about?

As a general manager, decision maker or executive leader you are permanently in the mix of changing market environments and expectations, multiple power players, political circumstances, your employees and much more. There is usually a lack of time, space and the possibility to exchange your challenges and thoughts with someone at eye level. Someone who shares the same experiences and is able to deliberate with you. Together we will find practical ways and develop courageous decisions that put you back in the driver’s seat.

Process and how we work together
  • Start: initial meeting in person to get to know each other and clarify your relevant concerns (1 hour)
  • Alignment on goals and overall coaching process (1 hour)
  • Coaching sessions in person: minimum 1 hour to max. 4 hours
  • Virtual coaching sessions: minimum 15 minutes to max. 120 minutes
  • Closing: concluding meeting in person and evaluation of goals and achievements (2 hours)

Team Coaching

What is it about?

I accompany you in finding out what successful teams are made of and you can develop them. Primarily I work with brief team interventions and real cases from your daily work life. Complementary off-site workshops and events make sense if they are productive to develop the team in a work sense. From my experience, teams have to be built at the place where they have to perform which in your case is mainly in the office, home office or wherever your employees create value for your organization. After all, a basketball team becomes a team on the basketball court.

Process and how we work together
  • Start: initial meeting in person to get to know each other and clarify your and your team’s relevant concerns (1-2 hours)
  • Alignment on goals and overall coaching process (1-2 hours)
  • Coaching sessions in person with the team: minimum 4 hours to max. 8 hours -> alternatively, frequent short interventions that perfectly fit into your daily work schedule (agile approach)
  • Off-site coaching and facilitation with teams (upon request)
  • Closing: concluding meeting and evaluation of goals and achievements (2 hours)

Leadership Coaching

What is it about?

This training basically deals with leadership and organizational development in a modern sense. Agile leadership, New Work und Digitization are some of the current buzz words out there. Here, you will learn what really matters to change, develop and become a leader in the modern business word and at the same time maintaining your own style and values. In addition, you will find out more about what’s really behind the above-mentioned buzz words and what really works in your daily business.

  • Module 1: LeadUrGame – self management (1 day)
  • Module 2: LeadUrTeam – team leadership (1 day)
  • Module 3: LeadUrSystem – team and organizational development (2 days)

Hi, I am Michael Worthy. I am passionate about Change Management, Organizational Development, Leadership and competitive Team Sports.

I have experienced both: the world of sports as a professional basketball player in the German pro division, and the world of business as a finance management consultant and top executive of a DAX30/MDAX corporate. Currently, I help general managers, decision makers and executives leading their organization and people through the ongoing changes more successfully. In doing so, I like using the analogy to the world of sports. On the one hand this approach easily illustrates practical options for measures in a game theoretical and playful way. And on the other hand, this approach leads you to take action and courageous and clever decisions when the chips are down. No worries, you don’t have to be an expert in competitive sports or in professional basketball yourself.
